The Regional Directorate of Education of Crete is headquartered in Heraklion and is responsible for matters related to Primary and Secondary Education in the prefectures of Heraklion, Chania, Lasithi, and Rethymno. The Regional Directorate of Education of Crete oversees approximately 1,100 educational units across both levels of education, specifically 866 primary education schools and 234 secondary education schools (117 junior high schools, 74 high schools, and 43 vocational schools).
In the region of Crete, approximately 12,500 teachers of all specialties are employed (6,460 in Primary Education and 5,985 in Secondary Education), and the total number of students amounts to around 100,000 (54,065 in Primary Education and 44,487 in Secondary Education).
Since April 2019, the Regional Director of Education has been Emmanouil Kartsionakis.
